Hedon is a small town in the East Riding of Yorkshire just 5 miles east of the city of Hull. It could call on a number of Hunting groups, including the Holderness, to support its race meeting. The inaugural meeting took place on Monday 5th April 1869 in fields forming a 3 mile course on the outskirts of the town, complete with water jump situated directly in front of the stands. The meeting, organised by Mr Foster of the King’s Head, was entitled the ‘Hedon, Hull and Holderness Steeplechases’ and opened with the Hunters Steeplechase won by Corkey owned by Mr Marsden. The North Eastern Rail Company boosted the crowd by providing an excursion train from Hull. After the National Hunt Committee adjusted the rules of racing in 1870 a meeting did take place at Hedon on Thursday 3rd August 1871, but the attendance was small and the programme included pony races. Meetings outside of the rules of racing did continue at the venue well into the 20th century. |
